Kala Art Institute is pleased to announce, Heft, the latest in Kala’s Off-Site Exhibitions series at Berkeley Central Arts Passage. We invite you to join us for the Opening Reception on Thursday, January 22, 6-8pm.

Heft presents the work of five artists converging around the theme of weightiness. Think: material weight, brawn, substance, chutzpah, socio-political significance, and muscles.

Terry Berlier offers three works that span a range of materialities: a neon sign indictment (originally a response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident of 2011) and two literally hefty objects. Angela Hennessy’s new works on view present a timely response to recent and ongoing racial injustice by foregrounding the chromatic and material density of blackness. Masako Miki’s finely detailed renderings of animal mysticism – often executed as enormous muralworks on paper – envision a world beyond human-centric logic. Stephanie Robison crafts her marble and stone sculptures with surprising agility, humor, and humility. Angie Wilson’s textile-based works utilize scale, repetition, and vernacular materials with an impact that belies their soft, maliasble origins and spark conversations about labor, consumerism, and the handmade.

Kala’s Off-Site Exhibitions series features artworks from Berkeley-based artists and the Kala community. Work- ing together in the vibrant downtown Berkeley Arts District, Berkeley Central Arts Passage and Kala Art Institute are forging new connections between artists and audience.
