The photographs of Youngsuk Suh allude to the notion of fire as a multifaceted human event. Suh’s recent series, "Wildfires," is comprised of photographs of the California landscape shot during the brushfires of 2008–09. They are monumentally-scaled landscapes, peopled by small figures, seen gathered in various recreational activities, all in the shadow of an escalating and nearing catastrophe. A sense of danger hovers nearby, yet is not immediately obvious, giving his images a menacing, yet elegant and subdued tone.

Young receiverd a Kala Fellowship Award in 2010. A native of South Korea, he teaches photography at University of California, Davis.
