Since the 1970’s Jeannie O’Connor has used a layered process which endows her photographic works with a striking three-dimensional quality. Half-painting and half-photograph, her pieces begin as black-and-white images, which she later prints onto clear film. O’Connor then applies acrylic paint to the reverse side of the film, often adding pastel and collage to a separate paper layer underneath.
Jeannie O'Connor was awarded the SECA award by SFMOMA and the Phelan award in Photography and her work has been shown internationally.
“I am interested in the tension between the photograph, which is instantly rendered, and painting, which evolves over time....My work has explored the dichotomy of opposites: the hard and soft, the real and the artificial, the fixed and the mutable.”
