Harry Clewans makes extraordinary woodcut collages, with a fantastic sense of visual complexity and layered meaning. In a unique process of his own invention, Clewans begins by making woodblock prints based on simple everyday objects encountered at random. He then re-organizes these images intuitively into dense, large-scale collaged compositions, featuring a dizzying array of images: from trees, faces and furniture, to interplanetary landscapes, and historical characters.

Though mostly self-taught, he trained briefly at the Art Institute of San Francisco. Initially a painter, Clewans began an exploration of the woodcut in the mid 1980’s. He splits his time doing fine art as well as custom painted finishes for his business Harry Clewans Fine Finishes.
