The Woodcut is considered to be the oldest printmaking process in the world. Evidence of this can be found on ancient Chinese scrolls some 5,000 years old. Basic principles of the relief print are accounted for here. However, the grain of the wood plank can affect your design and actual carving of the block, ending with some very interesting results. During this 3 – session workshop, participants will receive instruction by lecture and demonstration in the design and creation of a woodcut utilizing plank grain Pine. Participants will receive other pertinent information in regards to the class one week before the first session.

Emmanuel Montoya, a master printer with the wood and linoleum block, has been teaching for over 25 years. He has been practicing his craft in the Bay Area as an artist for over 35 years. The tradition of contemporary Latin American and Mexican printmakers are his inspiration and one of his influences.
