Night School is a class series based around themes. In each class of the Night School, series artist Emma Spertus will explore and illuminate the class theme with brief lectures, fast projects and exciting assignments. This session will unpack and reform the book in an art context. The class will run through the history of the book and the artist book in order to devote most of class time to studio projects. Through discussion and experimentation, participants will make books sculptures, book prints, book designs, and book discoveries. Techniques and ideas to be covered in BOOK include: basic book binding, non-photographic silk screen printing, relief printing, stencils, zine making, cover design, production of multiples, collaboration, display.
Emma Spertus received her MFA from Hunter College in New York for Combined Media in 2008 and her BA from Macalester College in 2001. Spertus works in a variety of media including installation, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing. Her work has been most recently exhibited at the Dorsky Gallery in Long Island City, White Columns in New York, The Lab in San Francisco, and MacArthur B Arthur and Important Projects of Oakland. She has been selected to be a 2012 Artist in Residence at Headlands Center for the Arts. Spertus was a founding member of local art space Rock Paper Scissors Collective and currently manages Real Time and Space, an arts studio and art residency in Oakland. www.emmaspertus.com
