As a painter and sculptor, Payne draws inspiration from natural forms such as seeds, tree branches and feats of nature like bird nests and spider webs. The repeated forms Payne paints and sculpts are often serene and elemental in feel and explore themes of dimensionality, motion, and dynamics in space. This piece is a site-specific wall drawing made in response to the client’s space and based on the steel and ceramic sculpture Chrysalis, installed in Kala’s gallery. Payne will cast the shadow of the sculpture onto the client’s wall and draw the shadow onto the wall in graphite. The sculpture itself comes with the installation and can be installed separately.
Emily Payne grew up in Mill Valley, California and Amherst, Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from Oberlin College in Ohio and her M.F.A. in Book Arts and Printmaking from San Francisco State University.
